We’re on the #roadtoportimao – together with 396 enthusiastic Rotax competitors from more than 60 countries plus their technicians, teams and supporters, for the ultimate showdown of the season. It is the celebration of the RMC champions and the drivers who qualify from around the world. This will be the biggest Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals to date in the 23-year history of this amazing karting event, which is uniquely LIKE NO OTHER championship in this sport.
It’s the fourth time that the RMCGF returns to Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve (previously 2012, 2015 & 2017) and the fifth occasion since Viana do Castelo 2006 in the north, that Portugal has been the host.
The Portimão Circuit, as it is known, is one of the longest in Europe stretching up to 1.6km and provides ample opportunities for overtaking; which means the racing will always be exciting. It is demanding and ‘getting a tow’ or slipstreaming is crucial to stay on the pace in the race, while technically challenging, smooth and undulating, always with the likelihood of coastal rain showers. The impressive motorsport complex is located near Portimão at Sitio do Escampadinho in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, which is around 20 minutes from the cities of Portimão and Lagos.
This year’s Grand Finals will definitely continue the long tradition of bringing the huge Rotax family together from the global racing community. The spirit of the RMCGF extends way beyond the track. The get-together parties in the paddock and the atmosphere around the big awnings creates a buzz. And the National Team Contest is back in a new format, so stay tuned to see your favourite team!
The ‘best of the best’ in each of the Rotax classes will ensure the race action will be sensational as ever once the competition gets underway mid-week, following the initial practice sessions. Eight categories are on the program in 2022 – with the introduction of the Rotax Project E20 Junior E-Kart class, boosting the numbers to bring a younger generation of racer closer to the sustainable future.
The three long-term chassis partners from recent RMCGF will continue to support the Rotax classes: BirelART (Rotax Micro MAX & Rotax DD2), IPKarting (Rotax Mini MAX and Rotax DD2 Masters) and Sodikart (Rotax Junior MAX, Rotax Senior MAX, Rotax E20 Junior & Rotax E20 Senior). Their specialist team personnel are available at the event for any advice and material needed by all the competitors.
